Capoeira is a traditional art-form that includes martial arts, acrobatics, dance, and live music.  It is a sport that includes steps, kicks, traps, escapes, and gymnastics in an interactive game.  Capoeira comes from the colonial era when African slaves in Brazil disguised self-defense as dance and play.  Today it is practiced around the world for fun, fitness, self-expression, and community.

Capoeira Água de Beber (ADB), located in Sacramento, California, is directed by Mestre Galego (Patrick Hilligan) who founded the group in 2000. ADB's academy Move! is a center for culture and community in Sacramento where the public can take weekly classes in capoeira and other arts.

Classes

Capoeira classes offer the public an introduction and a chance to participate in this unique art.  Our program includes traditional martial arts, dance, and acrobatics, plus music, language, history, and more.  Students progressively learn the steps, kicks, dodges, cartwheels, and rhythms while having fun and getting in great shape.  We have weekly classes for ages 3 through adults at Move! Studio in Sacramento, and in Davis.  You are welcome to drop in and watch any time.

Community Involvement

ADB is commited to being a positive force in the local and global community.  We believe in promoting capoeira's amazing capacity to transform individuals and build community.  In addition to maintaining a full-time cultural center, providing scolarships to local youths in the capoeira training program, donating performances and workshops to local causes, and supporting guest teachers, ADB makes regular donations to Projeto Kirimurê, a non-profit community center for disadvantaged children in Bahia, Brazil.
